Hubberton Hikers on Facebook
For some time now, as we all know, there has been a struggle to keep this website up to date. Some of you will know that early in 2010 we identified that a "social networking" website would meet our needs better, and so we set up and tested a Facebook group called "Hubberton Hikers International". We've been trialing this for some months, and we would now like to invite all of our regular hikers to use it.

To access it, you first need to be registered on Facebook. Many of you already are, but if not, its easy, reasonably quick, and completely free.

Once you have done this, in the search box at the top of the screen, search for "Hubberton", find us, and join the group. We'll then need to accept you (as a safeguard against spam etc), and once we've done that you will have full access to the Hubberton Hikers International Facebook group. Please DO add photos to events, DO add comments to the "wall", and especially please DO use this for adding commentary from events such as the Slovenia week! We absolutely want to hear from you!!

The reason we've done this is to put the website content truly into the hands of the hikers. Updating the content on Facebook requires no specialist expertise, so can be done by whoever needs to, and anyone with something to share can simply go ahead and do so.

The main website will continue to exist for as long as it continues to be worthwhile, but will not be updated frequently. In particular we will not continue to publish full hike details or photos on this site, and we will discontinue the current guestbook.

Update: A small number of individuals have reported difficulties in joining the Facebook group. Please be assured we will keep the "Dates" page alive on this website for the foreseeable future. The problem appears to be due to poor compatibility of some types of browser software when using Facebook. The only advice we can currently offer is to use the latest version of a widely used browser if possible, namely Internet Explorer 8 or Firefox 3. Please speak to somebody with technical computer skills if you need help with this (needn't be an expert, just willing and capable of installing software).

Thanks all

Website Guestbook
Due to a continuing issue with unwanted guestbook "spam" messages advertising inappropriate goods and services, we have now introduced a moderation policy on the website guestbook. This means that all messages will now be subject to approval by the webmaster before they appear in the guestbook. Normally messages will be approved within a week, but occasionally there may be a delay of 3 weeks or more. Approval will not be withheld without good cause; this is simply a way of keeping the guestbook clean from spam messages. Thank you for your patience and many apologies for any inconvenience caused by this measure. - Webmaster.

About the Hubberton Hikers

The Hubberton Hikers were originated from an idea by Andrew Bradley (now known as LEADER ) talking with Jonathan Lord .

The idea first arose in July of 2000 while they were on the out-set of the Pennine way, after Brian Ennis of the Thursday night quiz team asked Andrew to create some local walks for the "Elderly".

After many months of planning the first hike was planned for October 26th 2002 on which twenty people and one dog (Sally) turned out. It was then decided after such a great response to hold one hike every month on a given date. This has now gone on at a tremendous pace with a probable total now of over forty hikers. Many friendships have been instigated through the club and I'm sure many more will follow.

Twice a year in May and September, the hikers go Youth Hostelling to different areas. So far we have been to Castleton in Derbyshire and Stainforth in the Yorkshire Dales. The Youth hostelling was instigated by Andrew and two Coventry "Lads" whom he met on the Pennine way, Martin Towe and Brian Vicars .

In 2004 we successfully completed the 3 Peaks Challenge for various charities, and in 2005 the Lyke Wake Walk, 42 miles in one day, across the North York Moors.

The beauty about such a good team is that ANYBODY can join us on our Monthly walks at very little if any cost! If anybody would like further information, please call the LEADER on 01422 839881 or 07941 072530, or email at yorkieboy@hubberton.fsnet.co.uk , or use the webmaster address below.
